VOLUNTEER POSITION DESCRIPTIONS

ADMISSIONS DESK
Volunteers at the admissions desk will greet visitors, process ticket sales and memberships, and distribute audio guides. They are responsible for answering general questions about the Museum and work closely with Visitor Services staff to accommodate visitors’ needs.

GREETER
Greeters serve as the welcoming face of the Museum, ensuring that every visitor has a positive and informative start to their experience. Greeters play a key role in setting the tone for each guest’s visit by offering a warm welcome, answering initial questions, and providing essential information about the museum’s layout and offerings.

MUSEUM BOOKSTORE
In the Museum Bookstore, volunteers assist with customer experience by maintaining product knowledge and helping visitors with merchandise selection. They may also assist with merchandising products and tracking inventory as needed by the Visitor Services Manager and Coordinator.

DIMENSIONS IN TESTIMONY (DIT)
The USC Shoah Foundation’s Dimensions in Testimony allows our visitors to ask local Houston Holocaust Survivor William Morgan questions and receive answers in real-time through pre-recorded video interviews. Volunteers in this area assist visitors with interactive technology that has a notable impact on the visitor’s experience.

GALLERY HOST
Following a 3.5-hour training program, Gallery Hosts provide attention to sensitive areas of HMH’s galleries, remind visitors of Museum guidelines, and field questions from the public. Gallery Hosts are prepared to engage visitors in meaningful ways while ensuring a respectful environment within the museum’s various galleries. This is also a perfect opportunity for those interested in future participation in our Docent Program.

MEET AND GREETS FOR THE HMH VOLUNTEER PROGRAM

Interested prospective volunteers can apply online and then attend a brief interview with the Visitor Services and Volunteer Manager. This is done to establish basic expectations and explain the requirements for the new volunteers, including submitting a request for a background check and agreeing to attend a New Volunteer Orientation.

DOCENT PROGRAM

Docents are at the heart of our mission. They lead tours, engage visitors in meaningful conversation, and help ensure the stories we preserve are never forgotten. Whether you’re a lifelong learner, a passionate educator, or someone who simply believes in the power of history to shape a better future, this is your chance to make a real difference.

We are proud to serve a vibrant and inclusive community and are committed to reflecting that inclusivity in our docent program. We welcome applicants of all backgrounds, perspectives, and experiences. Our docent program is stronger when it reflects the rich mosaic of our city and the many communities we serve. We are also currently working to expand our ability to offer more tours in other languages, specifically Spanish, and would love to welcome more bilingual docents to help us connect with a broader audience.

Our comprehensive training program includes:

  • In-depth education in Holocaust history, human rights, and the museum’s galleries
  • Supportive, hands-on practicum sessions
  • A warm and welcoming community of fellow docent volunteers and museum professionals
  • The opportunity to make a lasting impact on visitors of all ages and backgrounds

If you’ve ever thought about getting more involved, now is the time.
